The design and materials chosen in construction determine how much embodied carbon pollution is created throughout the whole life cycle of a structure. Older structures built without considering this issue, frequently have poor insulation and are airtight throughout. In recent years, this has been an increasingly important criterion and focus in building design because it results in a structure that is not only more environmentally friendly but also much more practical and affordable for the user. In the design phase, surveyors play a special function that may have an impact on a building’s embodied carbon emissions.

Michael McCarthy is a chartered QS and principal of MMC Quantity Surveyors. MMC has specialisms in Life Cycle Costing (LCC) Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Whole Life Cycle Analysis (WLCA) & offers these services in the UK and Ireland. Michael will present the project that he has been working on with the Grangegorman Development Agency whereby he is helping them to reduce the embodied carbon of their buildings.
